The first 5 or 10 levels may be a breeze, but just wait until you start getting near the last levels. While this concept may sound simple, it gets extremely complicated as you progress through the levels. Once all of the tiles are placed down and matched, the level is completed and you move on to the next one! Tiles have to line up with one another in order for the colors to match. The idea of Mosaic is that players are given a set of tiles, which they must match up together. There is something so satisfying about barely dodging the spikes, and relying only on your timing and planning rather than your ability to use all of the different controls well is a fun change of pace. Along with that, you will also have to think about when you are going to try and continue throughout the map, as poor timing and planning will likely result in your downfall.įor having such a simple concept, Wup is surprisingly addicting. So how is this fun you might ask? Well, players will have to have immaculate timing as they dodge razor-sharp spikes coming for them. As you can probably guess, the controls aren’t too hard to pickup, at most, it will take you about 10 seconds to learn. No jumping, no turning back, no ducking, no shooting, just moving left. Wup is about as simple as it gets in terms of controls. Wup! A game that is almost as much fun to play as it is to say out loud. Or maybe you've got a fantastically fast machine, and you want to build your own terrain using higher-resolution vector data (vmap1, Tiger, osm) to get better roads/streams. Maybe the official scenery is too detailed for your slow machine, and you'd like to build terrain using a digital elevation model (DEM) with poorer resolution, to decrease the number of polygons and thus improve your framerates. But there is a variety of reasons you might want to use TerraGear to produce your own terrain files, rather than downloading the standard FlightGear scenery.įor instance, if you use WorldEditor to modify/improve information about an airport's taxiway/apron layout, you might wish to see how that modified airport would look in the scenery before deciding you're happy with the results. The TerraGear software reads data files containing ground elevation, airport locations and layouts, geographical land-cover data, and more, and produces the scenery files used by FlightGear to represent the terrain of the world.įor simplicity and convenience, most FlightGear users simply download the plug-and-play scenery files from the FlightGear scenery server, or use TerraSync to automatically download scenery as needed. The TerraGear software project supports FlightGear by creating the files used by FlightGear to represent the elevation and texture of the earth, including airports, cities, fields, forests, rivers, roads and so on. ![]() So if you’ve spent your whole life making a project schedule on a spreadsheet, why change now? I’m a big Spitfire Audio fan, but the high-end libraries price many users out. Plugins like this one are always interesting because good orchestral sounds can be tough to find, and when you find them, they usually carry a hefty price. There’s also a Room Reverb and Pan control. Being able to change the LFO Source is a big help on an instrument that relies so much on expression. Like the other SampleScience instruments, you can select the LFO Wave, Target, and Source. French Violin also features a highpass/lowpass filter, amplitude range controls, and a multi-LFO. The top part of the GUI is where you can adjust the core settings like articulation type and voice mode, etc. On the bottom half, you’ll find just over an octave of keys, along with some ADSR, Preamp, and Glide controls. The GUI follows the same layout we’ve seen in previous SampleScience instruments. From what I’ve heard, I think French Violin can provide a realistic performance for many uses, from pop ballads to media scoring. Realism depends largely on what and how you play. The point is, it’s true of any orchestral library, even the most expensive ones. That often means using some faders to record automation or a lot of tweaking afterward. Other times, the note isn’t so convincing alone, but it’s spot on when layered with other instruments.Īrticulation is another essential factor if you want to play realistic lines or even solos. What I would add is that with orchestral plugins, much of the authenticity comes from context.įor example, you might hold a single legato note, and it could sound realistic. As well as the six articulations, there are three voice modes, including polyphonic, monophonic, and legato. It has six articulations, which are arco vibrato, arco non-vibrato, pizzicato vibrato, pizzicato non-vibrato, spiccato, and tremolo. My one complaint on both was that they weren’t compatible with macOS Catalina upwards, and sadly, that’s still the case with French Violin.īut, that doesn’t stop me from appreciating the instrument and hoping I get to try it out soon.įrench Violin is a lightweight plugin that still provides an authentic sound. A seeded tournament is set up so that the highest ranked team plays the worst team, the second highest ranked team players the second lowest ranked team and so on. The number 1 ranked team goes on the blank line marked "1", the number 2 ranked team goes on the blank line marked "2" and so on. ![]() 16-bit gives us a much smaller range-96 dB-than 24-bit does-144 dB. However, that dynamic range is determined by the bit-depth of our recording. So in the digital world, our total available dynamic range extends from the noise floor to 0 dBFS. We often say a signal is really loud if it reaches -1.0 dBFS, because 0 is the point of no return. What does this actually mean, in terms of sound? In a 24-bit system, any recording with a value higher than 0 dBFS will be registered as a neatly clipped square wave for the duration. As Bob Katz put it on his website, “ by definition, there’s nothing higher.” This is called “full scale,” and we call a decibel measurement in reference to full scale “dBFS." Digital systems differ in that there is a set ceiling, above which nothing can happen. In an analog system, a signal can get stronger than, and even pass the point of distortion. How does the decibel show up in our work? Making sure we don't hit our head on the digital ceiling (dBFS and the decibel in digital audio) It’s much more important to have higher resolution between -1 dB and -2 dB than it would be to have that resolution between -60 dB and -61 dB. This is extremely helpful from a practical standpoint, in something like a level fader. However, a linear scale sees these values spaced evenly, while a logarithmic scale has finer resolution as you move up the scale. Now, it’s important to clarify that linear and logarithmic scales both express the same minimum-to-maximum range and the same number of values. The log scale correlates better to how we perceive changes in SPL (sound pressure level) in the real world. This is the first reason the decibel is so useful to us: we can quickly calculate, automate, move, or jump through values that are exceedingly wide in range, in a manner that is easier to digest. Increase the sound to be 1000 times as powerful as it originally was, and that’d be 30 dB. 100 times as powerful would be a difference of 20 dB. ![]() If you were to increase a sound to be 10 times as loud, you’d measure an increase of 10 dB. This is very useful for the purposes of audio measurements, and here’s an example of how: Notice how the line isn’t straight-it bends severely at first, then evens out as the values get higher. You’ll note the word “Bel” has been shorn of exactly one “L.” This was probably done to keep the company name from being used without their consent. Thus, the “Bel” was born, named in honor of Alexander Graham Bell, the pioneer of the telephone. Things cleared up around 1928, when a conference called the CCIF ultimately decided upon standardizing the TU. There was no standardization-companies and countries had their own systems of measurement, making comparisons exceedingly complicated. In fact, “miles of standard cable”-MSC-was probably the first measurement, giving way to Bell Lab’s Transmission Unit-TU-in 1924.Ĭapitalism being capitalism, a number of measurements were put forth by competitive entities. ![]() They needed a measurement, one to define the amount of signal lost over, say, a mile of standard cable. To fix the situation, engineers needed a method of quantifying this loss in the first place. Engineers immediately saw that early phone calls lost signal strength over distance: signals grew fainter the further they had to travel. The decibel’s history is found in communications-particularly, the cables that carried phone calls. The Telegraph? Both the British Royal Navy and the Emperor of Russia were involved in the earliest, practicable designs. The radio? Same deal: it transmitted messages to soldiers without the need of telegraph lines. The compressor? Originally, it was used to ensure no radio orders to troops would be inaudible. Fun fact: you can generally assume that your favorite piece of audio technology was invented for the purposes of the military, communications, or communications for the military. |
